We showed two videos during the program.

The first was Miley Cyrus singing an updated and feminist version of "Santa Baby" that we boosted by inserting a video of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez listing on how Republicans in Congress are attacking women's rights.

The second video was of guest Cody Conner's testimony at an October 2023 Virginia Beach School Board meeting.

This year we lost a dear friend of the show Linda Hirshman (Legal scholar, cultural historian, and author). In addition to celebrating her life and legacy, we used the 7-point playbook from the Abolitionist Movement she outlined in her 2022 article, “The Fight for Democracy Will Be a Long, Long Haul” to frame up our review of our 2023 programs. This list has been a source of affirmation, reflection, and inspiration. Watch this segment -

Sept 22: Roaring for Democracy

GUESTS+

Tennessee, a state with some of the most lenient gun laws in the nation, experienced the horrors of a school shooting on March 27. Three days later, protesters marched onto the Tennessee State Capitol grounds and demanded gun reform. Democratic Representatives Gloria Johnson, Justin Jones, and Justin J. Pearson were part of that march and took their protest inside the House chamber chanting, "No action, no peace." Instead of applauding and joining their call to stop gun violence, the Republican-led legislature called for their expulsion. Nicknamed the "Tennessee Three" – these outspoken defenders of democracy brought national attention to the hypocrisy and racism of the Tennessee Republican-led legislature and are inspiring a new wave of activism in the state.

The September 22, 2023 Friday Power Lunch featured two fearless Tennessee women - a member of the Tennessee Three, now a candidate for the U.S. Senate, and the President of the National Women's Political Caucus of Tennessee - who are "Roaring for Democracy."

GUESTS (in order of appearance):

JENNIFER WATSON, President of National Women's Political Caucus, Tennessee, told us how taking part in the Emerge training for Democratic women who want to run for office sparked her interest in playing a leadership role in Tennessee. Jennifer set up our discussion of what is going on in Tennessee right now in terms of women running for office and gave us a window into the politics of the Tennessee legislature, which she called the "halls of misogyny."

GLORIA JOHNSON, One of the Tennessee Three, Tennessee State Representative and candidate for U.S. Senate, told us about what it was like when the Republican-led legislature tried its shenanigans with the eyes of the nation watching.

Gloria shared her struggle to get her foot in the door of the state legislature, discussed how Republicans try to divide us by race, gender and age and explained why we can't allow them to drive a wedge between us. She also described the consequences of gerrymandering which allows Republicans to ignore Tennessee voters' sentiments about a variety of key issues. And finally, she spoke about the importance of running a Democrat for every seat so Republicans are distracted and seats Democrats can win, we are able to win

Sept 8: WORKING TOGETHER to WIN the Majority

GUESTS+

LUISA BOYARSKI (Director, Virginia Grassroots Coalition) delivered her grassroots update

Co-Host FINALE NORTON told a story about teamwork

In order to be as effective as possible in pooling volunteers and resources, grassroots groups like Network NOVA are working with Power Packs, collaborative efforts by candidates running for state and local offices in neighboring communities. We spoke with candidates from two different Power Packs to how they are pulling together to win back the majority.

Coastal areas of Virginia are key this election. And yet, candidates that aren’t in districts considered swing or leaning Democratic are lacking resources and support. We heard from VICTORIA LUEVANOS (SD20), CAT PORTERFIELD (HD99) and CHARLENA JONES (HD100) who have joined forces to be their own support system in these red leaning coastal areas.

One of the districts to watch this election is Chesterfield County, south of Richmond. We spoke with three members of the Chesterfield Power Pack - NATAN MCKENZIE (SD12), BILAL RAYCHOUNI (HD 72), AND TRACI FRANSSEN (School Board) - on how they are collaborating to build a blue wave in Chesterfield.
